More of Less

Just one more reason to hate Wal-Mart. Their "Organic" section? Yeah, what I joke. Granted, I am not a fan of mass-production places as a whole, so I'm sure my opinion is somewhat biased.

BUT:

Wal-Mart's first line of organic dairy is from from Dean/Horizon and Aurora . The pasture access which is a requirement for USDA organic certification is ON PAPER ONLY!!! That makes me sick. I hate the fact that something can pass by because of what is indicated in black and white. It takes away from the legit actions that true organic farmers are going through to ensure the quality of their products, as well as makes a mockery of our very certification process!

They are also outsourcing from China which kind of goes against the whole 'environmentally friendly' aspect of Organics in the first place. Are we really doing ourselves a favor by shipping products thousands of miles, thus creating even more pollution for our poor Earth to handle?

I fear that our local farmers who are TRUE organic growers are not going to be able to compete with the mass market of industry organics. Our prices will go down, but so will quality. I'm sure that the USDA organic certification standards will go down as well in order to encompass this "newly created " line of organic crap too... It's a vicious cycle!
